Photo Shoot Series: No Makeup Look
As a makeup artist, I sometimes get lost in all the wonderful colors and textures in my kit. It's evident in most of the work included in my portfolio - the models either have a bold lip or a sparkly or dramatic eye.
A photographer/stylist friend of mine brought forth the idea of creating a "no makeup" look because a common friend (also a photographer) needed it for his portfolio. I jumped at the opportunity and the photo above was the final product.
I just wanted to quickly share with you the products I used to achieve this look. Here goes:
Prep:
- NARSskin Luminous Moisture Cream
- Clinique All About Eyes Rich
- Make Up For Ever High Definition Primer
Face/Cheek:
- NYX HD Studio Photogenic Foundation - 01 Nude
- Cinema Secrets Concealer - Kit #2
- Shu Uemura Face Powder Matte Colorless
- Make Up For Ever Shine On Powder
- Smashbox Contour Palette
- NARS Blush - Outlaw (just the tiniest bit)
Eyes:
- Viseart Natural Eyeshadow Palette (as eyeshadow & brow color)
- TonyMoly Cats Wink Mascara
- Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil - Corrupt
- Make Up For Ever Lip Liner Concealer (yes, on the eye)
Lips:
- Edward Bess Ultra Slick Lipstick - Night Romance
- Edward Bess Deep Shine Lip Gloss - Sweet Dream
- Benefit Bathina
- Smashbox Contour Palette
I haven't used my Edward Bess lipsticks in a while but decided to whip these out and bring them to the shoot, without a plan. These were so easy to apply and photographed beautifully that I used them two weeks later during a bridal trial.
Anyway, I hope you found this post enjoyable or at the very least helpful. I plan on including more of my work and how I created the look, apart from the usual review.
Til next time ;)

The Charity Fashion Show
I wanted to share with you the work I did for a charity fashion show that was held last Sunday. This was particularly different because we, the makeup artists, never saw the dresses - we had no idea who was wearing what (there were several designers participating) nor the theme. To take away a lot of guess work, the head makeup artist instructed us to all do a smokey eye for the ladies.
All the models are doctors (or relatives) because it was their show and they were raising money for the hospital where they work. It was a great honor to get to contribute to a worthy cause. This was also near and dear to me because the hospital is actually an extension of the University that I attended.
I had the pleasure of doing makeup for this mom and her 2-year-old. It's not easy applying makeup on a toddler... especially when they don't want any. I bribed her with pictures of cats and pandas. In exchange, she let me put some color on her lips.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the photos. I hope I get to review something soon... I have a lot but I've been either working or sick. Boo!
Happy Thanksgiving to all! I am thankful for being part of this awesome blogging community and having friends like you :) Now it's time for me to have more of my mother's homemade pumpkin pie!

November Favorites
Okay, so this is my first favorites post. I joined Laura's (from My Newest Addiction Beauty Blog) instagram December Beauty photo a day challenge and decided to post it here in more detail. These are the items I used all throughout last month:
Giorgio Armani Master Corrector in 02 - I have horrible dark circles under my eyes because I'm an insomniac, aggravated by allergies. I love this because it doesn't get cakey.
Giorgio Armani High Precision Retouch Concealer in 3.5 - I use this on top of the corrector for better coverage and so that it matches the rest of my skin.
Shiseido Camellia Compact - I can adjust the intensity of this blush from soft pink to coral. Great to have if you're traveling and don't want to be stuck with one blush.
Guerlain Meteorites in Teint Rose - Love, love, love! I use this as my finishing powder and it's amazing for making the skin subtly radiant.
Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler - My silver one had to go into retirement and the limited edition gold version was re-released. An ever reliable tool that I can't live without!
Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Eyeliner - Of all the eyeliners I've tried, this stays on my waterline the longest. Essential for this voodoogirl.
SkinFood Black Bean Eye Brow Pencil - One end pencil and the other spoolie, I've been reaching out for this all the time because its pigmented and saves time.
Fairy Drops Creamy Treatment Base Mascara - An eyelash primer that makes my lashes thicker without the clumps. Non-irritating and the vanilla scent is delightful!
Fairy Drops Volume Burst Mascara - It delivers the volume promised, stays on from morning til night without smudging. I wish it would hold my curls a lot better though. Then again, its rare that a mascara can do that for me.
Dermalogica Renewal Lip Complex - My lips have been unusually dry, peeling even, and this is the only product that has repaired my lips time and again.

Sheesh... I just realized that I haven't reviewed most of these products. Really ought to catch up on reviews but I hope this will suffice for the meantime :)

Laura Mercier Petite Baked Eye Colour Trio in Golden Metallics
Of all the holiday collections, I look forward to Laura Mercier's most. This year one of the items I picked up was the Petite Baked Eye Colour Trio in Golden Metallics which contains three baked eyeshadow packed with shimmer.
I read on the box that it can be used either dry or wet - my preference is to use it wet because there's far less fall out and it brings out the colors better.
Gold leaf is a metallic yellow gold shade. Black Karat is loaded with warm gold shimmer that sits on top of a semi-opaque black base. Emerald (my favorite of the three) seems like a black-green duochrome when wet but when applied dry it shows as having light gold and blue shimmer on top of the same semi-opaque base of Black Karat.
This set comes in a sturdy, plastic case which has a mirror on the upper portion. I like this packaging because its compact which makes it easy to carry. And if you have a full makeup kit, this will be a welcome addition since it does not take up much space.
The way I wear this is by applying Gold Leaf on the entire lid. Then I put Black Karat on my lower lid and outer corner of my upper eyelid. The last step is to apply Emerald on the outer corner of the upper lid and the crease. Finally, a very light wash of Gold Leaf right above the crease up to the browbone.
Although beautiful, I think this a palette specially for the holidays... nice to have but something you can live without.

May Day Haul & A Quick Hello
A quick haul post from The Face Shop to usher my return to blogging. I'll explain why I was absent at the end of this post.
Anyway, I needed to restock on some essentials and ended picking up a few other items.
Anyway, I needed to restock on some essentials and ended picking up a few other items.
Their Silky & Soft Cotton Pad is something I need in my life. After reading a japanese skincare book that stressed the importance of using a lotion mask prior to moisturizing, I've been stocking up on these. Another item I got for personal use is their eyebrow shaver. This is how I deal with wild brows in between my threading sessions. For my client kit, I restocked on the Herb Day Lip & Eye Make-up Remover. It removes stubborn make-up like waterproof eyeliner or mascara and with moderate use, will not cause any irritation.
Green is my favorite color and I really liked the brush applicator on their Wide Nails range, so I picked up a bottle. From their regular line, I got a color that reminds me of Robin's Egg Blue. Sorry, I don't know the exact names of these shades because I haven't checked the label yet.
They released a lot of new items and I decided to go for their Bye Bye Dark Circle Concealer and Bright Pact (its a brightening powder) because I am willing to try anything that will improve my ghastly dark circles. I also picked up their Color My Eye Brow gel because I am smitten with a similar product from Etude House and I'm curious if this performs just as well.
Finally, I thought I got a powder puff but it turned out to be a sponge puff. Shame on me for not reading the description.
The reason for this purchase - GWP. I know, I know... but the deluxe sample of their Natural Sun cream is something I will surely use and the Tint Lip Balm sample was just too cute to pass up.

So here's the story of my short absence. A lot has happened - my favorite cat, Magic, passed away and I am absolutely heartbroken. If you're following me on Instagram, you probably already know this.
But what I haven't shared yet is that a few months after Magic's passing, we decided to foster an elderly cat named Robbie. He was rescued 4 months ago, and no one wanted to adopt him. When he was resuced, he was in terrible condition, he couldn't even move. The veterinarian told me that his kidneys are in bad shape and he needs to be on a special diet for the rest of his life. This made us want to care for him even more! He's a really sweet boy. Right now, we're just fostering him but I have a strong feeling he'll be a permanent addition to our home.
And speaking of home, we moved. Again! This kept me busy the most. I spent a month screening ads, contacting agents and viewing homes. And then a month and a half was spent renovating. Originally, the workers were supposed to only spend 2 weeks on the place. But things were more complicated than it seemed and more work had to be put into painting, constructing, etc. It's not a new place but the location and neighborhood is great. That being said, this isn't our last stop. In a few years, we are moving again. Come to think of it, this is the fifth time I've moved in 7 years.
It's also been a busy time for me at work, which is always good. But our family also had a major blow this year that just put all my plans to switch careers on hold. I can't talk about it just yet, but once everything is okay, maybe I can.
In the meantime, I do have a few products coming up for review. I just need to find a good spot here at home to take photos! I also stripped my blog of its pretty design because I want to change it but I still don't know exactly what to do yet. Ah, the problems bloggers face.
It's nice to be able to blog again. I'll post again real soon! :)

Blog Facelift v2
Last year, this blog received a facelift because I was bored with how it looked.
Last night, I was tinkering with the code without a goal in mind. Mind you, I know zilch about this stuff. I just had this overall idea and BAM... I accidentally erased everything except the banner. So this is why other bloggers always advise to back-up the template. Now I know.
Thankfully, etsy has some pretty cool and affordable pre-made templates. I was able to quickly replace what I had lost. Crisis averted. Whew.
I like this new minimalist look.

Review: Spa Sonic Skin Care System
It's nice to see a few skin care system options out there and I was fortunate enough to get to try Spa Sonic. Aside from the Spa Sonic device, the set comes with batteries, two face brushes, a body brush, microdermabrasion sponge and pumice attachments.
The attachments move in a rotational motion - it was a bit challenging controlling the device. There's a definite learning curve before I got the hang of it.
The face and body brush bristles feel ultra-soft and the initial impression I got was that it would feel gentle on the skin. That was true with the body brush and I thoroughly enjoyed using it in the bath. My skin got the exfoliation I needed without the scratchy feeling that normally comes with some scrubs.
However, I had to be extremely light-handed with the face brush because after the first few times, my skin felt raw. On the upside, there was no need for an astringent or toner after use. It truly does get rid of any dirt trapped in the pores.
I was pleased with the pumice attachment as it was gentle enough to use daily on the soles of my feet. The literature that came with the set said that it can be used on the elbows and knees but personally, I would not dare use pumice in those areas - too harsh, in my opinion.

The microdermabrasion brush is used in applying skincare products. Use the sponge to apply your serum or moisturizer to your face. It did not feel any different from when I would use my fingers to apply skincare. Plus, this seems the least practical since sponges should be replaced regularly for sanitary reasons.
Spa Sonic gave me the same results as my Clarisonic Plus. My skin was exfoliated and I got the deep cleansing I needed. The body brush and pumice are my favorites because it provides me with different levels of exfoliation.

Bottom line, this is a good option if you are in the market for an affordable spa brush. Just be mindful of the pressure especially when using the face brush attachment. I'm happy with the number of attachments included in the kit. And the cost of replacing the attachments is very reasonable. Available in Walmart or Target.

Sneak Peek: Pro Kit Edit 2013
I recently noticed that I was running low on some items in my client makeup kit. There were also some products that I did not love and wanted to replace them. It was time to do a major kit edit.
As much as I love my Graftobian HD Cream Foundation palette, I also want to try out other products. I have heard so many good things about the Fard Creme of Maquillage Pro coming from reputable artists. I ordered two foundation palettes as well as a smaller one which can be used for the lips or to color correct. I also got a bottle of the Make Up Mixer in case I need to sheer out my Fard Creme.
Whenever I need to do touch-ups during photo shoots, my pot of loose powder just causes a huge mess. The Kett Sett powder is a translucent setting powder and I got this specifically for my tool belt. I know this will come in handy when I need to do a quick touch up during photo shoots and since its a pressed powder, I can bid the mess goodbye!
Finally, I got several pots of Whip Hand Cosmetiques' Set The Stage primer. Instead of having to carry different kinds of primer, this little pot will be the only primer in my kit.
My client kit is going to go through a major overhaul and I hope to be able to post that here. I hate having to carry a lot of products so my goal is to have everything fit into a backpack!

Review & Swatches: Chanel Stylo Eyeshadow
Chanel introduced their Stylo Eyeshadow this Summer and in my opinion, these are the most interesting pieces from the collection. There are 6 colors in total, all with a metallic finish and striking in their own way. If you are familiar with the Eye Caviar Stick from Laua Mercier, these are very similar.
Stylo Eyeshadow is easier to apply compared to other cream eyeshadow like MAC Paint Pot or NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil. These glide and blend effotlessly - it feels cool, like water, when it touches the skin. Sometimes, I like to use a medium concealer brush for a sheer wash on the lid. Overall, its a cinch working with this product.
My personal picks are Black Stream, Cool Gold, Moon River and Pink Lagoon. I think these four can be worn by anybody, any season. Makeup Artists and enthusiasts will love having Stylo Eyeshadow in their kit as it cuts application time in half.
I found these to be long-lasting with eye primer underneath (of course) - no creasing, smudging or sliding for 8-10 hours. Yes, these are amazing!
For the look below, I used Moon River, Black Stream and a tiny bit of Cool Gold.
In other news....
Remember when I mentioned we were fostering a cat named Robbie? Well, guess what? We ended up adopting him. I had an inkling it would lead to this. He's such a character and we love having him around!
He's gotten to be quite tubby - not surprising since he has a huge appetite. :)

Review: Dermalogica Concealing Spot Treatment
This summer has been harsh on my skin - one of the things I was troubled with was frequent acne breakouts. I felt like there wasn't a single day I was acne-free for two months. The main thing I changed in my makeup routine was the use of an acne-treating concealer instead of my usual.
Dermalogica's Concealing Spot Treatment is pretty self explanatory. The name sums up what the product should do: it conceals while treating acne. Information on how to use the product is on the tube and it's simple.
Directions: Dot onto finger and apply to afflicted area. Let stand for five seconds, then pat until blended in. Use until breakout has cleared.
This concealer/treatment disappointed me for two reasons: first, it was difficult to blend. The product just sat on top of my skin and slipped too much, even after allowing it to set within the specified time frame. As a result, it could only cover the smallest spots.
The second thing that displeased me was that it only worked on mild acne. It had no effect on bigger eruptions and could not treat my cystic acne.
If you suffer from the occasional little spot (the kind that's barely obvious to the whole world but you), then this is fine as it can neutralize redness. However, I don't recommend this to those with moderate to severe acne.
On the bright side, I was able to try another brand of acne-treating concealer that worked. Will tell you more about that next time! :)

Review: NARS Fashion Rebel Duo Eyeshadow (Before Summer Ends, Part 1)
Welcome to my Before Summer Ends series! I'll be blogging about some Summer 2013 products that I haven't been able to feature. Just in case your local counters still have them or you're still on the fence about buying it, I hope this guide helps.
Today I'm showing you Fashion Rebel, a new addition to NARS' ever-growing duo eyeshadow line. It features a bright, yellow and orchid-purple shadow which complement each other well.
Before I proceed with my review, let me apologize for the pictures below... I took them upside-down. *sheepish grin*
Moving on.
Let's start with the texture - I'm a bit disappointed that whenever I pick this up using a brush, it gets very powdery. Although it's a bit messy in that aspect, it surprised me that I did not have any issues with fallout.
I'm partial to the yellow shade because among the two, this was easier to work with - color payoff was decent (with the help of an eye primer) and blending wasn't difficult, although I can't say it was effortless. I can't get over how pretty and vivid this looks!
And then there's the purple half of this duo. Even with the primer, it was too sheer - in the swatch below, I swiped it four times. Application was a challenge - the purple part had a tendency to look uneven even after layering and blending. In fact, I decided not to post the look I created because it looked horrible photographed. I dislike this as much as Marie-Galante.
As a NARS fan, I was disappointed with this product. Although the yellow was good, it reminds me a lot of Buttercupcake from Sugarpill which is something I already have.
The colors aren't personal kit essentials and there are others out there with far more superior formula. Skip this and look for those instead.

Review: Pierre Hardy for NARS Blush Palette in Boys Don't Cry (Before Summer Ends, Part 2)
Among the two blush palettes released in the Pierre Hardy for NARS Collection, Boys Don't Cry was my pick because I did not own a blush like it. Rotonde, on the other hand, was something I felt was easy to find.
In terms of limited edition products, I love this as much as MAC My Paradise. I wish it was available forever.
What's nice about this palette is that its considerably larger than the regular NARS Blush. It's approximately the same size as the NARS Bronzer. This, along with the fact that it is one of the most pigmented blush I've seen, means that it will last a very long time.
Boys Don't Cry is a beautiful matte coral shade. The gold overspray goes away after a few uses and barely makes a difference.
Below is a picture showing it heavily swatched (about thrice swiped) - vibrant, yes?
Since it is heavily pigmented, I apply this using a stippling brush which I lightly dip into the blush. I then dab this on my cheek. The key is patience and a very light hand. Maybe some practice too.

Beauty Diary: Hair Care Products That Are Currently In Rotation (2013 Edition)
Hair care is my weak spot. This is my normal routine: wash, condition (occasionally), air dry and apply serum (only when I need to wear my hair in a bun). The most I would do was buy some form of aromatherapy shampoo. I don't even know how to style my hair... still can't to this day.
It was only in November last year that I had to pay more attention to the products I use because I started coloring my hair some shade of purple or blue.
Because I want to keep my color bright for as long as possible, I had to switch to products which protect color treated hair. I kind of miss those days when I could use any shampoo and not care... but having purple hair makes me feel like me. You know what I mean?
I've tried a few brands of Shampoo and Conditioner. Right now, I'm using Pureology Pure Volume Shampoo. No special reason why I chose this kind except that I heard from friends that Pureology is a good brand and I just randomly picked the type. It's supposed to be for fine hair, which I don't have, but it works fine and I'm happy with it. It has a nice, powdery scent.
The conditioner I use was recommended by my colorist. I mentioned to her that I tried using baby shampoo and it gave me dandruff. She figured my scalp needed something gentler and told me to try the Malibu Scalp Wellness Conditioner. It doesn't feel as slippery normal conditioners but it still manages to keep my hair soft. It contains Spearmint oil (among other things) which makes me feel like my hair is eating a stick of Wrigley's Double Mint Gum! Seriously!
Special mention: Shampoo & Conditioner by Syoss. I bought it when I went on a trip to Hong Kong - the first place I had my hair colored. The folks at Hair Corner recommended it and it worked wonderfully in making the color last.
Fail: Shampoo & Conditioner from Nature's Gate. Its meant for color treated hair but the color faded within a couple of weeks and my hair felt dry. I wasn't a fan of the scent either.
I used to wash my hair everyday but I can't do that anymore. So I've learned how to use Dry Shampoo. The first one I tried was from Etude House and it was super easy to use because it was an aerosol spray. However, the scent was too overpowering for my liking.
Jonathan Green Rootine Dry Shampoo and Lush's No Drought are in rotation currently. The former has a brush applicator while the one from Lush can either be applied using a powder puff (I use a blush puff) or with bare hands. Its a lot messier than the one from Etude House but at least I don't have to put up with the scent. The one from Jonathan doesn't smell like anything. No Drought has a faint citrus scent. Admittedly, I am still struggling using these because I'm just not used to it.
My stylist cut my hair in a way that I could change my look depending on the situation. Let me explain further: if I part my hair on the right side, the purple and yellow streaks are barely visible but when I part it on my left, the streaks are right there - loud and proud. I love that he was clever enough to figure that out!
Because of that, I now need some products to tame my locks and guide it to whichever way I want. While my hair is still damp, I part it. To keep it in place, I use Shu Uemura Depsea Water. Yes, its a product for the face but I recently discovered that this works well with my hair too! Sometimes, I use Sea Spray from Lush. Although I'm not too fond of the scent, it gives my hair the hold it needs without making it feel stiff.
Since I'm pretty new to the world of hair care, are there any other products I should check out? Let me know by leaving a comment! :)

1. Begin a Cleansing Routine
During the summer months, it is a good idea to switch to a vigorous facial cleansing routine. Washing with a fat-based soap in the morning and evening can help to remove dead cells, rehydrate the skin and make your epidermis appear fresh and supple. Using a soft cold cream three or four times a week will also help to protect your skin against the elements it is exposed to when you are outside during the summer.
If your skin is prone to be on the oily side, consider using a light and gentle detergent-based cleanser. You can follow up this cleansing routine by using aloe around the eyes and on the neck to gently remove makeup in a safe and natural way.
2. Use Exfoliating and Mask Routines

2. Use Exfoliating and Mask Routines
Using exfoliating and mud or cream masks will help you to strip away old skin and provide much-needed nourishment. Using homemade scrubs and beauty masks using natural products such as strawberries, avocados and tomatoes is the perfect way to embrace all-natural and affordable beauty treatments you can do from your own home.
3. Maintain Moisture
3. Maintain Moisture
Maintaining moisture by applying an organic moisturizer to your face, neck and hands a few times a week will help to reverse the affects the sun causes on your skin. Consider using natural oils and plant-based creams such as coconut cream and aloe oil to give your skin a refreshing hydration treatment.
Homemade Strawberry Scrub
Homemade Strawberry Scrub
Ingredients:
• One medium strawberry
• Dash of honey
• One teaspoon of brown sugar
Method:
• Combine ingredients. Simply dampen your skin and gently apply the scrub to your face, neck and hands.
This recipe works best if it is made fresh before each use. The brown sugar acts as a natural exfoliating agent while the fresh strawberries will gently clean your skin without the need for chemicals. Pure honey keeps the skin soft and supple and also helps to pull out toxins that are commonly found in skin. Continue use of this recipe once a week in your regimen for long lasting benefits.
