Pet Parenting: Remembering Robbie

One of the reasons for my temporary withdrawal from blogging was that I had two terminally ill senior cats who needed all the attention and care we could provide to make their remaining days comfortable. We wanted them to feel loved. I already wrote an entry about Portia. It's Robbie's turn now.

Unlike the others we rescued as kittens or adopted as young adults, Robbie joined our family already a senior living with chronic kidney disease. When he was rescued by a local animal welfare group, he was no longer moving because of severe dehydration, infection and weakness. They were able to nurse him back until he was "healthy" enough for adoption. Our veterinarian kindly but truthfully set our expectations - that the most we could do was make his remaining years comfortable by maintaining what he ate and giving him his medication.

Months after his 1 year anniversary at our home, his health took a turn for the worst. We had to take him to his doctor weekly. Many sleepless nights were spent making sure he had round-the-clock attention because of all the medication he needed. We even discovered that having him listen to meditation music helped on days when he needed subcutaneous fluids. He hated that... and his injections, but found the nebulizer relaxing. He understood everything we did was for his own good.

Robbie needed a forever home and I loved him as soon as I saw him. He was Lily's frenemy and Pepper's best friend.

Heeeeeyyyy!

Is it too late to wish you all a happy new year? :) Hello, by the way! How is everyone?

I feel like I owe you all who are *still* reading this blog an explanation for my absence. A lot of things have happened since the start of 2013 that turned life upside down. A few happy things. A lot of unexpected, some very disappointing events. Recently, a major change that has forced me out of my comfort zone. I wish I could tell you everything but I am not comfortable writing these details in such a public space. Maybe over a cup of tea instead? :)

Right now, I am in the process of chasing after a dream that is unknown. Vague, dramatic, but 100% true. I wish I know what I'm doing, but I don't. I am scared, excited and hopeful that good things come my way.

The video above was taken during a beach wedding I attended last December. Although my husband and I are not beach people, we had a blast with our friends. I was tempted to post a few more photos but I am saving that for my other blog.

Did I tell you I'm starting a new non-beauty blog? I thought I needed a fresh start. But I'm not sure if I should link it here or not. Still undecided. I am still going to update The Stepford Witch with beauty posts, of course.

xoxo

Beauty Diary: Express Face Routine

All Products Purchased

Having to drastically switch time zones (12 hours difference!) plus suffering from insomnia really messed up my body clock. It's been almost 4 months and I still have not adjusted - this means staying up long hours and waking up so late that I'm lucky if I can even go out to run an errand each day.

On the bright side, I was forced to master the art of getting ready in a jiffy. That's about 20 minutes to shower, apply skincare & makeup. Here are the products I use when I don't have the luxury of time.

My skin has been extra dry and rough of late. So for skincare, I always start with the Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum. For a year now, it has been an essential part of my skincare routine and makes a world of difference on how the rest of the products get absorbed into my skin. Next up is the Skin79 10 Seconds Mask which is a 3-in-1 product. I just press the sheet on my face for 10 seconds and pat until it is properly absorbed. It replaces having to apply a separate toner, emulsion & serum/essence.

I then apply The Skin House Real Snail Wrinkle Free Cream under my eyes. Followed by whatever sample packet of day cream that I have - I'm trying to go through my samples before I open a fresh jar of cream. Dermalogica Renewal Lip Complex is what I apply to keep my lips from cracking and peeling. The last step is to apply sun protection. Currently, I use Allie (Kanebo) UV Long Keep Gel.

For my makeup, the goal is to just look clean and less haggard. I try to even out my skin tone with Chanel CC Cream, followed by NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer on my under eye area. I set the concealer with Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder. To be honest, my under eye circles can never be totally covered so I just aim to reduce the appearance of it.

To frame my eyes, I use Tony Moly Lovely Eye Brow Pencil on the sparse areas of my brows. Canmake Stay-On Balm Rouge is what I use to colour my lips and brings the look together.

If I can find a way to reduce the products I use, I would. For now, this is the bare minimum I need to keep my skin feeling and looking healthy... and enough that my neighbour's children won't freak out.

What's your express face routine? I'd love to hear any shortcuts you have and what products you use.

Rouge Gorge

Illusion d'Ombre is my makeup kryptonite (alongside Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks). When I hear about a new release, my heart pounds faster. I feel restless about not having it in my hands now. Right now!

And don't these two Fall pots look so Halloweeny? I love them. Because they are Illusion d'Ombre (yes, I know some colours aren't great but its an irrational thing for me). And because I've been liking how coral shades look on my eyelids. And because my Mirifique is dried up that I feel I need Fleur de Pierre. I could think up of more reasons to justify why I need these...

Fleur de Pierre

And so, I am utterly frustrated since I live in a place where we get Fall releases during Winter. #$%@&*$!!! It sucks. I called the Chanel counter today and asked the sales associate to put these aside for me once it arrives.

Speaking of hardcore fangirl - I am still searching for a brand new pot of Destination. No such luck on eBay. So if you know where I can find it, please, please, PLEASE let me know.

Review: Etude House Dust Cut Facial Mist

$

Some time last year, Etude House released the Dust Cut line - entirely devoted to protecting skin from pollutants. Included are a cleanser, cream, sheet mask and facial mist. This is an interesting line for anyone who lives in a polluted city and whose skin has become sensitized.

I purchased the facial mist to try out since I go through these fairly quickly. The way this specific product works is you spray it after applying skincare or makeup (I do the latter) and its meant to protect the skin against harmful environmental particles. Upon application, you're supposed to feel the skin tighten which means a barrier has been formed.

I've only felt the tightening sensation a few times... and it's hardly noticeable. But I feel that it works because my face feels cleaner, it doesn't get greasy and my makeup stays on longer. It's not marketed as a setting spray but it works wonderfully as one. I've been reaching out for this whenever I need to spend the entire morning & afternoon away from home.

One thing that doesn't sit well is that it contains alcohol and it's second in the list. If you are sensitive to that ingredient, you should skip this mist. Another negative is the strong fragrance - it has this green tea/herbal/minty thing going and it's quite strong! I have to hold my breath and shut my eyes tight for a few seconds to avoid getting sneezy and teary-eyed.

Although this was nice to try out, I would not repurchase because of my allergic reaction to this product. If Etude House can do without the strong scent, I would reconsider.

Oh, what happened?

Sometimes we just need to reboot to get things going. Well, I hope this is the push I need.

Clean slate.

I did not delete my old blog posts. I just moved. They can still be found here.

Ok, that's it for now.

MAY EMPTIES: A quick review of my favourites and what made me go "meh."

$

Skincare has been my primary focus the last couple of years because I'm not getting any younger and I need to take extra care of it. So here's this year's first empties post - most of these are products I would purchase again and there's one that's just meh.

Let's do this by order. Keep in mind, I have dehydrated skin and these work well for me.

Let's start with the Biore Micellar Cleansing Water. Unlike most micellar water products which feel like water, this had a slightly slippery feel to it and left something like film on the skin. It's one of the better products in this category as it effectively removes makeup including waterproof mascara. It is gentle on the skin and I did not feel any burning or stinging sensation when I used this to remove eye makeup.

I always wash my face after using a makeup remover, and did so with this.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about HERA Cell Essence from YouTubers and Bloggers in Korea. I've been wanting to try it but HERA, being a high end brand, is pricey. Was it worth it? Seeing this at Duty Free, I had to get a bottle because my skin hasn't been so great with the hot & humid weather. I hoped this would give it the boost I need.

I use this immediately after cleansing my face. It comes with cotton pads and I soak that with product. Then, I sweep from the middle to the outer part of the face and pat it around the eye area. It is whitish in colour and feels like water. The scent is gentle and dissipates after a while. Immediately, it made my skin feel softer (this is always a good thing as it helps in absorption of other skincare products).

I noticed a change two weeks into using the product - my skin felt and looked hydrated. Rough patches were gone and replaced with smoother looking skin. My face was also brighter but in a subtle way.

Each bottle is supposed to last a month but I was able to stretch mine to two. Definitely something I would purchase again when I find a local retailer or when I travel in the future.

Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum is a constant for me. I apply this after washing and before my toner. What it does for my skin is it soothes it and reduces redness. It also makes it softer, supple and more moisturised. It has a honey candied ginger scent which I find relaxing.

I've been using this for 3 years now (a bottle lasts 3-4 months, used twice a day) and this is an essential step in my skincare routine. Without it, my skin just doesn't feel as moisturised. I love it so much that I have two back-up bottles because I am afraid of running out, as it is not available where I live.

Here's the MEH (as in it's nice but nothing great). I've has this Truffle Therapy Serum from Skin & Co. for some time now and it's not something I constantly reach for but I decided to use it all up before it expires.

While it does make the skin more soft & supple, the effect does not last for very long. Even with constant use, if I miss just a day or two, my skin feels like it deflated. There are other products in the market that I've tried which have a longer lasting effect.

The deep & earthy truffle scent is quite nice though.

And finally...

But first let me tell you that I started making products last year, started selling at craft fairs this year and was offered a shelf inside concept store at a nice mall. It's been therapeutic for me because... issues. I'm not naming my brand because it is not my intent to sell or promote, I just want to share how good these are. Anyway, here are two of my personal must-haves.

On the left is my Cuticle & Nail Balm which contains Argan, Evening Primrose & Sweet Almond oils. It also has Lavender essential oil because I tend to use this only at night and wanted a relaxing scent. Being a horrible, horrible nail biter, this helps when I want to behave and let my nails recover from abuse.

The balm keeps the cuticles moisturised and keeps it from getting thick & dry. It also helps strengthen my thin & weak nails, as it grows. Other people who have purchased this from me have also raved about it because they don't have to get their nails done at the salon as often.

The empty bottle on the right is my Sea Salt Hair Spray. I haven't released this yet because I wanted to try it myself. It has a light hold which tames the baby hair that I have along my forehead. I also find that it helps add volume without feeling so stiff. I'm pretty happy with this and will include it in my product line up in a couple of months.

Okay, that's it for now. Time to figure out what I'm going to post about next!

Til next time... xoxo

REVIEW: Laneige White Plus Renew Original Essence

$

Suffering from adult acne, hyperpigmentation and rosacea can be frustrating. Dealing with scars from cystic acne, uneven skin tone, dry and rough skin. It's a vain woman's nightmare - my nightmare. Haha!

I've gotten a lot of help from Laneige White Plus Renew Original Essence, which I have been using for about three years. Side note, I can't believe I only wrote about this now.  I was in a desperate place, having multiple cystic acne (at most, 11 at the time time!) and scars took forever to fade. Reapplying concealer is not something I remember to do and would rather find a way to make the scars go away for good. There was an ad for this product and thought to myself, what the heck...

Four weeks into using the product, I noticed that my skin looked more radiant. Fresh off the shower, I looked at the mirror and noticed that glow from within. After 8 more weeks, my scars faded. Usually it took 6 months, give or take, for that to happen naturally. My skin also felt softer than usual. It also works to inhibit melanin production, preventing further darkness with continued use.

Fast forward today, I am still an avid fan and continue to use this serum because it makes my skin look better as opposed to when I do not use this at all. In fact, I started using the Emulsion from this line too.

I apply this after my toner and before moisturiser, twice daily. Three drops massaged on the face is enough. Sometimes I add a little more when I notice there's some discolouration on my décolletage too.  The texture is thin and runny, which allows it to quickly absorb into the skin and feels light. It has a slight fragrance which dissipates within minutes.

Ingredients (Asian Market): Purified water, butylene glycol, dicaprylyl carbonate, biosaccharide gum-1, squalane, dicaprylyl ether, caprylic/capric tryglycerides, niacinamide, saururus chinensis extract, shea butter, green tea extract, yeast extract, stearyl glycyrrhetinate, hydrogenated lecithin, glyceryl stearate, cetearyl alcohol,C14-22 alcohol, xanthan gum, hydroxyethyl acrylate/sodium acryloyldimethyl copolymer, stearic acid,C12-20 alkyl glucoside, polyglyceryl-3 methyl glucose distearate, PEG-100 stearate, carbomer, tromethamine, disodium EDTA, ethylhexyglycerin, phenoxyethanol, flavoring
Ingredients (North American Market): Water, Butylene Glycol, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Squalane, Dipropylene Glycol, Dicaprylyl Ether, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Niacinamide, Silybum Marianum Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Yeast Extract, Broussonetia Kazinoki Root Extract, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract, Resveratrol, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter Extract, C14-22 Alcohols, Inulin Lauryl Carbamate, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Propanediol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Xanthan Gum, C12-20 Alkyl Glucoside, Glyceryl Stearate, Carbomer, Stearic Acid, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Ethylhexylglycerin, Tromethamine, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Disodium EDTA, Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate, Methyl Methacrylate/Acrylonitrile Copolymer, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance.

I was looking for a bottle of this in Target and noticed that it is packaged differently in the US. You can find it under the name Bright Renew Original Serum. There's also a slight variance in ingredients, although I cannot tell for sure if it makes a huge difference in the outcome. The thing is, in Asia (specifically in the Eastern region), the term whitening does not mean bleaching. Rather, it means restoring original skin tone, making it look more radiant and healthy.

Have you tried using a brightening serum? Which one works for you.

REVIEW: The Saem Urban Eco Harakeke Eye Serum

$

0

Eye skincare is probably one of the trickiest products (for me) to review. Sometimes, we can only feel the difference and more often than not, what we feel does not translate to outward changes. That does not apply to The Saem Urban Eco Harakeke Eye Serum - let me tell you why...

But first, let's talk about what's in this product. It contains 78% Harakeke extract instead of water which, is usually one of the major ingredients in lotion and cream. Harakeke is also known as New Zealand flax and is supposed to be an excellent hydrator. It can also reduce puffiness & it soothes the skin.

It is also said to contain Manuka Honey, Orange & White Tea. The last two are for brightening.

The texture is that of a thick gel and it feels like there's a good amount of silicone in the product because of its too smooth and slippery feeling. It reminds me of Whip Hand Cosmetics' Primer. And this is my main issue with this product.

I know it takes a long time to see results in eye products, so I measure short-term effectivity on how this makes my skin feel. In most cases, the products get absorbed well and my under eye area feels hydrated. After 6 months of using this eye serum, I can safely say it does not feel like it sinks in. It just sits on top of the skin. Perhaps it works at a cellular level, but I really can't tell. There weren't any changes on the appearance of my under eye area either.

It's a shame, considering the active ingredients seem promising.

The only pluses I can think of are the packaging and size. It comes in a tube pump with a cap, no air gets in. Hygienic in that its unlikely any bacteria gets in. It also contains a generous amount of product - 30ml for an eye product. That's a lot!

My skincare regimen consists of either homemade products or Korean brands because they work best on my skin. So its either I whip something up (that will entail a good amount of research) or I continue my search for something good. In the meantime, I have some samples (GWP) that will tide me over.

What would you recommend for dark & dry under eye circles that are developing its first few deep lines? Puffiness isn't an issue because my skin in very dehydrated. I would love to hear what your favourite eye products are!

Til next time.. ;)

DIY Bath Salts

$

0

I was making a fresh batch of bath salts for a craft show I'm joining this weekend... and figured, why not share a basic recipe on how to make it?

Bath salts are great for a couple of reasons: Sea Salt helps retain moisture in the skin and makes it feel soft. Epsom salt helps relax your muscles. And the feeling of just soaking in warm water? Ah, heaven!

First, you'll want to add equal amounts of Salt in a bowl. Sea Salt & Epsom Salt are pretty basic. If you want your bath salts to look extra pretty, add some Himalayan Salt or Black Lava Salt.

A cup total is pretty good - that should give you about 3 soaks in the tub worth of salts.

Next, you'll want to add an Essential Oil. Do some research on what specific aromatherapy benefits essential oils have. I chose Lavender because of its calming properties.  Keep in mind that you only need 10-15 drops of oil for this recipe we're making today. Your body can only handle & absorb so much that a little goes a long way.

If you want to add herbs, go for it. Just don't go overboard because you still have to clean that off your tub when you're done! A good ratio would be 1 tablespoon herbs to a cup of salt.

Store in an airtight container and if you notice clumping, just give your container a hard shake or two to loosen your salts.

You'll need about 3 tablespoonfuls or 1/3 cup of salts to add to your bath.

No tub? No problem... you can still use these as a relaxing foot soak! ;)

REVIEW: Hada Labo Tokyo Replenishing Hydrator

$

0

It took me a long time to make up my mind on what the Hada Labo Tokyo Replenishing Hydrator is. Is it a moisturiser? Serum? What? I still can't quite figure it out. That being said, I still like it.

First thing I need to mention is that my dermatologist told me to go for products that contain Hyaluronic Acid because it can provide my dehydrated skin the moisture it needs. That's how I ended up with this purchase from Ulta.

It has the texture of a watery gel and does not have a scent. Glides on effortlessly but takes a while to fully absorb. Contrary to what it says in the packaging. So you've got to help it. After massaging it on my face, I gently pat it down several times. This results in a sticky light mask which you need to let sit for a few minutes. After that, it sinks in - the sticky mask-like feeling is gone and your skin will feel softer.

The bottle also says that you can apply this over makeup. Given the texture and the way it sits on top of the face, I've never tried it out of fear my foundation/powder/bb cream won't like the formula. Who knows, I might feel adventurous one day.

I like the fact that it contains 50ml worth of product and to use as a serum or moisturiser, you only need a drop. But usually, I use this as my evening moisturiser and use 2-3 drops for extra moisture. Regardless, it is worth every penny and works well. No nasty side effects like acne breakout or itching. Yay!

This is my first (and so far only) product from Hada Labo. I was drawn to it because I heard its a popular brand in Japan. Have you tried this brand? What products from it would you recommend? Let me know at the comments section. :)

PREVIEW: Rouge Bunny Rouge Caliche Eyeshadow Palette

There's no denying how much I love Rouge Bunny Rouge. Their products look and feel luxurious, it never disappoints. I'm pretty stoked to find out one of the products for Autumn is the Caliche Eyeshadow Palette.

This quad features purple hues in a silky finish. I think its a lovely alternative to the usual matte brown or satin rosy palettes around (you know what I'm talking about). The new formula contains nourishing Argan Oil and encapsulated Hyaluronic Acid. From a cosmetic formula perspective, I can understand how Argan Oil works in this formula, but Hyaluronic Acid is something I associate more with skincare, not makeup. I wonder if and how it makes a difference.

Left to right: Dusky & Earthy Aubergine, Rosy Ecru, Rosewood, Mauve

I own quite a few RBR eyeshadows and reviewed one in the past. They are pretty awesome - the pigment, finish, blend-ability & wear time all get top marks. I can't imagine how much better the formula can get but I'm looking forward to finding out.

Are you excited about this release too?

  • REVIEW: The Saem Healing Tea Garden Green Tea Cleansing Water

Thanks to the popularity of Bioderma, we're seeing a lot of cleansing waters pop up from different brands. Now, I do love my Bioderma Sensibio but I feel that it costs more than what its worth. I've tried Biore, which is more affordable, I like it but it left a bit of a film on my skin. In search of a happy medium, I've come across the cleansing water of korean brand The Saem.

I'm going to cut to the chase because I'm down with the flu. Ok, back to what I was sharing.

I came across this product because a Korean YouTuber was raving about this. When I saw this during a trip abroad, I immediately purchased a bottle. Lucky me because when I returned to the store, it was sold out.

It pretty much works the same as other cleansing waters - apply it on a cotton pad and use it to cleanse the face. Rinsing with water is not necessary but recommended. Even without rinsing, it makes my skin feel super clean without a trace of anything left behind. It also works great in removing mascara & waterproof anything! It also contains Green Tea extract which the company claims helps retain moisture. I did notice that my skin still felt soft & hydrated after use. Another plus!

A definite winner in my book because its affordable while providing the same results as Bioderma. I'm one happy camper!

    What's your favourite micellar water?

    REVIEW: IOPE Enzyme Powder

    $
    0
    0

IOPE is a high-end brand in Korea famous for their cushion foundation. Its the brand's best-seller. I haven't read about their skincare products but I was curious because it seemed good.

As I'm on a self-imposed beauty no-buy, I've been going through my stash of products a lot slower than I used to. Excited as I was 18 months ago to try out the IOPE products I purchased, I had to restrain myself. It's only recently that I was able to get the IOPE set out since I ran out of other products. The Enzyme Powder is the first one up for review.

If you're familiar with Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant, this is a similar product. Similar but not identical. Similar in that it contains rice powder (enzyme) and in the way it is applied to the skin.

This product dispenses as a powder. The opening in the bottle was quite wide and I was afraid of taking too much but somehow, that never happens. All is good!

The instructions say it should be a quarter-sized amount but I use less, like nickel-sized to be exact. Then I add three drops of water to make it into a watery paste.

It doesn't look like much but when you start to wash your face with this, it lathers. And you only need a little to get your entire face clean.

Is it a cleanser or exfoliant?

The answer is both. I use this after removing my makeup with cleansing oil. This is so effective in removing the dirt in my skin - it feels really clean but not squeaky dry. You know what I mean? Its a tad gentler than Dermalogica's version and it makes my skin a bit smoother too.

The only thing I am not a fan of is the fragrance. It has an aquatic and pine-y scent. It's not a deal breaker though, because its not cloying.

The verdict: this is my favorite exfoliant to date. I love how my skin feels after & it works well with the other products in the IOPE skincare range.

I purchased this at Amore, a beauty store inside the building of this huge Korean grocery in TX. They have other Amorepacific brands in there like Sulwhasoo & Laniege. Good stuff.

A question for you ladies (and gents) who are on beauty no-buys... How do you cope? My heart breaks when I see something beautiful that I can't buy. But I've been good at keeping myself away from temptation! And fellow beauty bloggers, any suggestions on how to keep my blog alive inspite of this no-buy? I'm terribly shy about showing my face.

    Butterfly Pea Tea

    $

One of the ladies I met through a soaper's group sold a few pots of Butterfly Pea plants last Summer.  I purchased two from her, out of curiosity. It was a buck each anyway. No flowers yet at that time and it took a few months before my first bloom (above) appeared. Isn't it gorgeous?

With little luck I have when it comes to plants, I'm happy that this is low maintenance. All it needs is sun and water everyday. I'd say this comes second to my Aloe Vera in terms of surviving my black thumb.

The flowers looked familiar and I wasn't sure why. After reading up on it, it dawned on me - I had this in a salad at some point. Fancy! I also found out that these are taken as a tisane (floral tea). So I tried it and here's the result:

    Freaking cool, right?

I dropped one freshly picked flower in a cup and poured hot water over it. Right before my eyes, I saw the water turn blue slowly. It was a pretty awesome sight to behold. According to what I read online, the color will change to violet if you add some lemon juice. I have yet to try that.

What does it taste like? With just one flower in this cup, a very faint nutty taste. It gets stronger as you add more. But my plant doesn't bloom fast enough to get six flowers in there... maybe because the weather is colder?

A lot of online articles claim that drinking this tea has health benefits but this post explains why and cites research behind it. Yay! I'm going to need to spend time nerding out on this newly discovered information.

    Happy New Year, everybody!

I'm so glad 2017 is here. The second half of 2015 til the third quarter of 2016 was terrible for me. I want to just flush those months down the toilet. Hopefully, everything will be better in the coming months.

Instead of making resolutions, I'd rather have goals. I never stick to resolutions but goals are another thing. It may just be a matter of semantics but whatever works, right? I don't want to overwhelm myself either. So I'm sticking to simple goals that I know I can do and will have an impact.

    1. Only buy new products when I'm running low or when I've actually run out. 2016 was a more economical year for me when it came to personal products (makeup, skincare, etc). Since I was developing new products for the handmade products I sell, everything I earned, I spent on new ingredients. And I went over what I made. Ooops! Towards the end of last year, I was sort of finding my way around that so I think this is something I can do.

    2. Wear dresses. I love wearing dresses - they feel so comfortable. But I've been stuck in a rut and most of the time would wear jeans and a t-shirt. I've been lazy about my appearance and I want to put a little effort into it this year.

    3. Come up with a routine. Working freelance and from home takes a lot of discipline. I would put off work because in my mind I tell myself that I can work any time I want. And when its time to get something ready, I cram and end up tired or sick. There's a reason why things need to be scheduled. I already took the first step and bought a planner. It helped me in the past when I would write down my to-do list and check it off one by one. I didn't get anything fancy - I'm happy with my plain old Moleskine which has a lot of writing space, since I take down notes all the time.

    4. Lose weight. This isn't even about looking good. I feel like crap. Physically. Been experiencing a lot of health complications because I'm at my heaviest ever. All my doctors have said that I need to lost the weight. In line with that, my sub-goal is to 4a. Eat healthier by consuming more vegetables, 4b. Reduce or eliminate rice, noodles and bread (aka unhappy asian!) and 4c Hit the gym. Use up the membership I'm paying for.

    5. Listen to my gut when it comes to people. Those who know me well know that I am shy, even if it doesn't seem like it. It's difficult for me to engage from small talk, so I'd rather avoid interaction altogether if I don't make a connection. I also get this gut feeling that some people are just "off." So why this goal? Because people have been telling me to be more sociable, make new friends. I tried. I really did. But I should have listened to my gut. On a personal level, I stuck with "friends" who would only get in touch when they needed something or wanted to brag about something. Then become total assholes in the end. On a professional level, it was being part of a "community" and then realizing that some people do not share the same business ethics and shit hits the fan. I hate dishonest people. I hate it even more when they do that to me. Bottomline, listen to my gut.

I have a few more that I want to do but I want to start with these first. The point is not to overwhelm myself. When I'm doing good with some of these, then maybe I can set new goals for myself.

How about you... what are your goals for this year?

    It Was When I Got Body-Shamed I Discovered I Am Body-Positive

This was originally supposed to be on Instagram. But I want to get a discussion going so I'm putting it here instead.

I recently got body-shamed by an acquaintance who was trying to sell me some "magic" underwear. I won't go into much detail about the product except that it worked in making me an inch smaller everywhere by tucking stuff away. What I want to focus on was the way she pitched the product.

    It was just so wrong.

Before I tell you what happened, I need to say that I am at my all-time heaviest. I'm petite but wear a size 10. I used to be a 0. Yes, I want to lose weight - who wouldn't? But I choose to work at it the healthy way instead of looking for a miracle. And if I don't go back to my original size, it's okay as long as I feel healthy.

So this woman, asked me to fit the "magic" underwear. She then tells me that my boobs look higher with her bra. Honey, I'm a few years away from 40. Gravity will catch up and I've accepted that.

Then she said my panties make my fat obvious. Sure, thongs and spanx are nice, but I choose comfort for my day to day wear. I don't have a need to look sexy when my schedule revolves around buying groceries, paying bills, walking the dog and cleaning litter boxes. And please, my granny panties rock!

No matter what she said to make me feel insecure, I had a comeback. I know my body is far from perfect but I've made peace with that fact and I'm okay with it. Sure, I'll work at being better but its not the end of the world if I can't wear a body hugging outfit.

What infuriates me is how she tried to prey on what she thought would be my insecurities for the sake of making a quick buck. I feel bad for the other women she has done this to. You might call me naive because this practice is everywhere. I know that. But on a more personal level, can't we be kinder to each other? There's enough shit going on - we don't need this.

The good thing that came out of this experience was I discovered I love myself more because of the way I reacted.
